How To Minimize Irritation Caused By Over-Exfoliation

But, one of the trickiest things with exfoliation is that you don’t actually know when you’ve overdone. Sometimes, we over-exfoliate our skin and that leads to irritated, inflamed, and stretchy skin. In some severe cases, over-exfoliation also leads to breakouts and rashes.

Rub An Ice Cube

To calm down the over-exfoliated skin and to treat the redness, rubbing an ice cube is really important. Ice helps in reducing the redness to a great extent and also clams down the skin.
Wrap an ice cube in a silk cloth and gently press over the inflamed skin until the ice melts. Follow this twice a day for a week. Make sure you’re not vigorously rubbing the cloth as this will increase the irritation.

Apply Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera gel is a great natural cooling agent that helps in soothing inflamed and red skin. Also, using it in the natural form will not irritate the skin further. The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera gel help in treating redness and rashes.
Apply aloe vera gel over the affected area and gently dab it over the surface rather than rubbing it. If you’ll rub the aloe vera gel vigorously it might further irritate your skin.
Follow it every night or twice a day for about a week. You can also keep aloe vera gel in the refrigerator for adding more cooling benefits to it.

Stay Away From Harsh Ingredients

When you’re skin is going through the signs of over-exfoliation it’s better to use fewer products on the skin and avoid using harsh and active ingredients in your skincare routine for a while.
Use fewer products in your skincare regime for a week and just follow up with mild and natural products. Using too many active and harsh ingredients can exaggerate the inflammation and redness. Avoid using salicylic acid cleansers, niacinamide based serums, retinol, and vitamin C for a week and let the skin heal naturally with simple and mild products.

Gently Pat Your Skin Dry

The biggest mistake we all do and that harms our skin, is vigorously drying our skin with the towel. Every time we pat dry our skin, we vigorously rub our face with the towel and that irritates the skin further.
When you’re dealing with the symptoms of over-exfoliation such as redness, irritated, and inflamed skin, make sure you do not rub your face with the towel after washing rather gently pat dry the face, remember you only have to soak the excess water off the face and not completely dry it out as it could lead to dehydrated skin too.

Break From Exfoliation

Even when your skin is healed give your skin some break from exfoliating ingredients for a while.
