The right way to prep your skin for the colder months

Have you been noticing a slight dip in the temperature and the fact that days are getting shorter while the nights longer? Well, it’s a clear-cut indication that winter is just around the corner, and it’s heading your way. Considering winter will be here in no time, it’s time to switch your skincare routine as the products you used for summers aren’t going to work effectively for your dry and rough skin during winter. This weather transition can easily take a toll on your skin, and winter definitely isn’t the best news for your skin as this frigid weather can easily leave your skin excessively dry, lackluster, and deprived of hydration.
The only way to deal with the challenges winter comes with is by preparing your skin for cold and harsh temperatures. And this is the right time for you to start preparing your skin for winters so that your skin doesn’t find it hard to get acclimated to cold weather, and the transition goes on smoothly.

Switch to gentle cleansers

Since cold and harsh weather already leaves your skin pretty dry, you don’t want to worsen it by using harsh cleansers that will rob your skin of its natural oils further. Therefore, you need to invest in a gentle and mild cleanser that won’t dry out your skin. You can consider investing in a creamy and nourishing cleanser that won’t strip your skin of moisture. Also, avoid using products that contain glycolic acid or salicylic acid in the beginning, this will help your skin to get acclimatized to cold weather.

Your skin already struggles with maintaining the hydration levels during winter, and using products like toner and scrubs will only make it harder for your skin to retain moisture levels. Therefore, you should probably consider giving toning and scrubbing a rest so that you don’t dry out your skin excessively. You should also give astringents some rest, and only use them when they are actually required.

Include nourishing ingredients in your skincare routine

The only thing your skin craves during winter is the hydration, and since you are the only one that can make up for the lack of moisture, you will have to put in some efforts. Aside from using creamier and thick moisturizers, including nourishing ingredients in your skincare routine is possibly one of the best ways to deliver hydration to your skin. While a ceramide-based moisturizer is an excellent option for those who have excessively dry skin, a potent ingredient like hyaluronic acid can also deliver some excellent results when used correctly. Including nourishing ingredients in your skincare routine will help to lock in the moisture in your skin.

Wear your sunscreen

Just because the sun doesn’t feel as harsh as it does during summer, it doesn’t mean you should skip wearing sunscreen. Your skin is still very much susceptible to getting damaged or tanned because of the UV radiation, and it can be severe during winters. No matter how overcast it is outside, you should never step out of your house without slathering on sunscreen on every exposed part of your skin. Also, you should reapply your sunscreen every two to three hours throughout the day.

Don’t forget to moisturize your body

It’s not just your face that has to bear the brunt of winter; your entire body gets affected due to this weather change. Therefore, instead of focusing on moisturizing your face alone, you should also pay some attention to other parts of your body. You can use a body lotion or body creams to get your dry skin to feel baby soft and smooth.
